WAGERS, Dr. Larry R.
Passed away on January 5, 2018 at the age of 80 in New Port Richey, Fla. Larry was born January 24, 1937 in Salem, Indiana to Steve and Lola Wagers. He was preceded by childhood sweetheart, Dr. Phyllis Wagers, on September 11, 2016 after 61 years of joyous marriage. He is survived by his son Scott (Stacey) and daughter Julie (Mike), grandchildren Luke, Lola, Adam, and Allison, and brother Harold.
Larry graduated from Salem High School in 1955 and served in the United States Army. He attended the University of Tampa on a basketball scholarship and earned a Bachelor’s degree, a Master’s degree from Western Kentucky University, and a Doctoral degree in Education (Ed.D) from Nova Southeastern University.
Larry and Phyllis served Hillsborough County Schools for 55 years combined. Phyllis retired as Principal from Clair Mel Elementary. Larry started out as a teacher and coach at Leto High, served as Dean at Madison Middle School, Assistance Principal and Athletic Director at Plant High, Assistance Campus Director and Athletic Director at Hillsborough Community College, and Director of Administration for the Hillsborough County School System; Larry retired as General Director of Operations.
Larry was a basketball fanatic, appeared in the senior games regularly, and played throughout his 70’s. He enjoyed playing one-on-one basketball with his son Scott, current USF Assistant Coach, and always looked at those times fondly and as a tremendous bonding experience.
Morgan Funeral Home is providing cremation services. Per his request there will be no formal memorial service as one was provided by the Hospice Chaplin in-home with immediate family.
