Marie T. Drain, 96, beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother, died on October 27, 2020 in Port Richey, Florida surrounded by her family, after a very full and eventful life that included 1 world war. Marie was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1924 to Nicholas and Julia Collucci, who were second generation European immigrants. She married Master Sergeant James W. Drain, U.S. Army, at age 19 during World War II. He predeceased her in 2004, as did one of her ten children Carol Cooke, Hudson, FL, this year.
To her family and friends, Marie was an inspirational spirit who loved life and extracted every ounce of joy out of it that she could manage. She not only enjoyed life to the fullest, she was a ray of light, laughter and joy to everyone she met. Her attitude towards life was “if you rest, you rust”, and she certainly did not rest. No matter when or what time, she was ready to have fun and a new adventure. An interesting trivia fact related to the above phrase, “if you rest, you rust” - the producer for the movie Twilight Zone, The Movie asked if they could use this line of hers in their movie segment about older people. She was remarkable not only for the activities she took part in regardless of her age, but overall because she impressed many as an extremely generous loving and kind person. She used to say, “it’s not about what you have, it’s about who you are.”
Marie retired in Port Richey, Florida after working for many years as a wedding supervisor for the DuPont Country Club in Wilmington, Delaware. She began work there as a banquet waitress while living in New Castle, Delaware and later moved to Florida with her husband Jim.
Her family of ten children appreciated her devotion to making great meals every night that often included cakes, pies and other baked goods. She enjoyed cooking and loved preparing big meals and entertaining her big family. Nine of her children are surviving: Mary Ellen (and James) Joyce of N.C.; Barbara (and Edward) McGinty of Fl; Ariel Andres of Ca; Kathleen Drain of Fl; Theresa (and Tim) Beasley of Fl; Maureen Logan of De; James Drain Jr. of Fl; Robert (and Seena) Drain of De; Joseph (and Lynn) Drain of Va. And 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Clara Kulikowski and brother Thomas Collucci, both of N.J. and many nieces and nephews.
Outside of the home, she enjoyed visiting with and entertaining friends and acquaintances with her quick wit, and jokes. She was a hoot. People got a big kick out of her when they first met her because she absolutely loved people and children and was very engaging and affable.
Later in life, Marie enjoyed another passion: deep sea fishing, which she began in her eighties, competing for and landing trophy fish with a group of anglers half her age for decades. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
