Richard Irvin Matthews, Jr., age 84, passed away August 29, 2024 in New Port Richey, FL. A native of Ahoskie, NC, he was born to Richard and Tinnie Matthews on June 15, 1940.
Richard was predeceased by his parents Richard and Tinnie Matthews, his daughter, Terry Matthews, his sister Libby Kessinger and husband Bill.
Surviving are his wife, Carolyn, of 64 years, children: Kenneth Matthews and wife Dawn of Kannapolis, NC, Kathy Horner and Bob of New Port Richey, FL, Judy Vest and Vic of Spring Hill, FL, sisters, Shirley Ryan (Tom Ryan) and Billie Jo Hoggard (Basil Hoggard), four grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
He worked for the A & P Tea Co. in Ahoskie, NC before moving to Maryland where he and Carolyn raised their four children. He worked for Giant Food for 20 years as Produce Manager. Richard loved to go boating and waterskiing at his get-away home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. In 1984 he moved to Florida where he owned a ranch with horses, cows, and goats. He spent many weekends riding through the forest in Florida. He also had an RV and went camping. He made many friends along the way. Richard was a devoted husband, father, neighbor, and friend. He never met a stranger.
Richard will be laid to rest in Ahoskie, NC at a later date. A celebration of life will be held at that time.
